2008 is the 400th Anniversary of John Smith's landing on Falmouth Shores. Discovery Days will be telling the history of the many people in our area at many heritage tourism sites and parks throughout Falmouth.
Discovery Days Falmouth! will include the John Smith Shallop, Native American Historical interpreters, Colonist, Revolutionary re-enactors, Civil War demonstrations, cannon firing, Community Art projects, Professional/Quality musical performances and several surprises! You'll need to keep checking the official web site to find out the latest.
Speaking of surprises, we don't know yet where we'll be located. As soon as we know, we'll post the information here. Promise.
The 2007 celebration of Discovery Days was hosted by Fredericksburg at City Dock on August 18-19 in downtown Fredericksburg.
We were there at City Dock for two days of fun. Some good music. Some historic reenactments. Some folks in costume. A pretty good time all around. The weather cooperated by cooling down a bit after weeks of high temperatures.
In 2006, we were privileged to be part of the Discovery Days Festival - River Exploration. The event took place at Aquia Beach Landing, on the banks of the Potomac River. The Godspeed, Jamestown's historic replica tall sailing ship, was there. For most of the two days, it was anchored in an inlet and people could take a boat out for a closer look. But, occasionally, it would weigh anchor and sail out into the river so that everyone could get a better look at it.
They also had a cannon on board that they fired from time to time. The booms made us jump every time the cannon fired.
We had a great time at the event. It was hot, but with our location on the river we enjoyed the occasional breeze.
