In Colonial times, many soldiers went home during the winter months, it being hard to fight campaigns in the snow. In the spring, communities would muster the troops to train for the coming campaigns. Fredericksburg's March Muster recalls this time when local militias would muster during the Revolutionary War. The muster takes place in Market Square, adjacent to the Fredericksburg Area Museum.
The 3rd Annual March Muster in 2005 was our first full-day festival. We were amazed at how much fun they were able to pack into Market Square. We also appreciated the fact that the Boy Scouts were there to volunteer to help us. They helped us unload the trailer and set up the tent, which was pretty nice.
